I am a Senior Engineer in Ergon Energy and Energex\u2019s Intelligent Grid New Technology team. I have a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical & Space) from UQ, a PhD in Engineering (Metals Combustion) from QUT and a Graduate Certificate in Power Supply Engineering undertaken during the first years of my career in electricity industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I develop, test and deliver innovative solutions to emerging network challenges. For the past five years I have worked on network analytics tools in collaboration with industry partners to enable a future filled with rooftop solar, batteries and electric vehicles. This work won Energy Networks Australia's 2021 Industry Innovation Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was awarded the 2021 Women in Technology \"Rising Star Technology Award\" and was a finalist in the Excellence in STEM category. When I finished school, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I always loved maths so I became a high school teacher but quickly found it wasn\u2019t for me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I kept teaching at university while I did an Honours degree (studying the maths of how people wobble when they ride bikes), then a Masters degree (studying how roads squish as we drive over them). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve now found myself in fisheries, using maths to help the environment, and I love it. I had no idea that this kind of job existed until I saw it advertised! I am a Data Scientist in the Customer and Digital Group at the Department of Communities, Housing and Digital Economy, and I love creating stories with data to help people make better decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born and raised in Cairns QLD, I was an avid dancer and with that, a huge competitor. I would compete with myself every-day, to be better than I was the day before. Ultimately, this motivation led me to finish school with grades that let me into almost any university course. But with choices, comes uncertainty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After chopping and changing majors several times throughout my degree, the many happy accidents I had along the way landed me in a data analysis role in the Queensland Government Digital & ICT Graduate Program. This is my third year working in the team and in that time, I have successfully landed higher, permanent positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I began my policing career as a First Response Officer, responding to a variety of incidents in two extremely busy areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early in my career I had the opportunity to work alongside Scenes of Crime Officers, and see first-hand how successful crime scene examination and evidence collection can expediate the interception of an offender and assist with achieving a positive court outcome. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I left \u201cmainstream school\u201d at the end of Year 10 because I knew I wasn\u2019t going to do well in my exams and get a good ATAR. I could never sit still or concentrate very well and was easily distracted. I moved to a sports school for Netball, to complete my Year 11 and 12 in VCAL and completed my VET Certificates 2 & 3 in Sports and Recreation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After I finished school I completed a Diploma of Sports Development. During my time doing the Diploma I realised that I did not want a career in the Sports Industry anymore. I always had an interest in carpentry and building things with my dad as a kid in the garage, so I thought about doing a carpentry apprenticeship. I started off by doing a Pre Apprenticeship to see if it was something I wanted to do. I loved it and realised I wanted to be in the Construction Industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After completing my Pre Apprenticeship I had an interview with Hutchinson Builders. I grew up in Toowoomba and had planned to be a pilot in the RAAF. However I didn\u2019t make the cut so I studied engineering instead as had always enjoyed maths and problem solving. Fast forward, and I have 12+ years\u2019 experience in the energy industry \u2013 and have loved it! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve spent most of my career in FIFO roles, either supporting drilling operations or on construction projects. In these roles I\u2019d spend up to 4 weeks at the work location, then go home and have up to 4 weeks off! I travelled A LOT working at remote locations across Australia, New Zealand, UAE and PNG. Think deserts, jungles, rigs in the middle of the ocean!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the past two years I\u2019ve had \u2018office\u2019 jobs in power generation and, now, renewable hydrogen projects. I also co-chair our Origin gender equity network and am an Origin Energy Foundation Ambassador. Even though most of my senior school subjects were in the STEM field, engineering wasn\u2019t on my radar until I saw a documentary about the extension of a subway line in America. I honestly don\u2019t remember the details of the documentary but what stuck with me was how engineering could change the lives of a community \u2013 opening possibilities just by moving people from point A to point B!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would like to think that I did well at university, however I graduated several years after some of my peers due to needing to repeat some classes. Even though I pursued a dual degree of civil engineering and marketing, I graduated with no graduate role and spent six months in retail management before using the skills from my studies in the corporate world of IT and engineering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, I\u2019m a civil engineer who is helping our clients develop communities and public spaces across Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For as long as I can remember, I have loved aviation, space, technology and design. Studying mechanical and aerospace engineering at university brought together all these passions. For me, the challenge of engineering lies in understanding the fundamental technical concepts and being able to connect the dots to have a practical and meaningful impact on the world. I am also passionate about giving back and investing in the next generation \u2013 mentoring and conversations about STEM are important to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No career path is a straight-line; the twists and turns on mine have led me to study, work and live overseas as well as work on cutting-edge technologies across different military and passenger aircraft.
